Wild Meat Sauce, by a Top Bloke

My 'Jelly and Jam Queen', Mum, sent me a bottle of the Sauce of meat sauces, Glasseye Creek, Wild Meat Sauce, from the Mediterranean Market in Queenstown N.Z. This stuff (sauce) is wow, with a ‘home-grown’ flavour, yet with a ‘Paul Newman’s own’ kinda gotta get some more… ‘pull’!

The ‘good joker’ from the ‘Main land’ (South Island N.Z.) Don Keebles, who is the bloke who beavered away at the recipe, seems resolute to tell the story through his friends, especially his good mate, Dave White who owned the Little Wanganui Pub.

“So, fueled with the West Coast atmosphere, the attitude of the people, the quality of the tucker and the heritage of our newly enlightened patron of the pub, Don set out to create a sauce that captured these elements, to be a best mate of meat and to complement the unique flavours that these premium meats offer! For the next 6 months, in his small kitchen at home, Don produced over 40 different recipes and brews, supported with many a tasting session and a wee tipple with his mates, to eventually hone, refine and settle on the recipe that is now known as Glasseye Creek Wild Meat Sauce”.

“……He was brewing a few bottles here and there for mates who tried it and wanted more. The Little Wanganui Pub then began serving it with most of their meals (not whitebait), and big Dave was using it in his marinades, roast meat gravies, casseroles, stews and pretty much everything he served from his legendary kitchen, which was the home of the famous ‘Fat Bastards Special’”. ~’Our Yarn’, glasseyecreek.co.nz.

The development of the recipe seems to be assisted greatly by good old scotch, so perhaps Don shipped the sauce to his friends in the empty whiskey bottles… and then never stopped using them! If I was a bona-fide foodie, I’d give this saucy stuff all the stars! And then there’s the good bloke; ‘Yoda the Prawn Star’, who’s got a story too!

Intercontinental Family Life

I’m flying to LA today …missing my three girls awfully already… I’m going to miss their first assembly in their new N.Z. school, Where Marlana is going to say ‘My Mom is an American and my Dad is a Kiwi. When we fly to America, at the airport they say to me welcome, to my Dad they say, ‘what do you want, what are you doing here?’…..

When Marlana rehearses her little speech it’s very amusing … My daughters think it’s funny they sail through customs as American citizens and I get asked lots of questions… even though I have a VISA!

Clay Cliffs

I recently took the girls to a far out location called the 'clay cliffs' (Lord of the Rings location)... very dangerous the girls reckoned.... Sienna shoot me playing golf at 'the Hills' very exclusive Home of the New Zealand open.... wearing jeans....

YES! Some members have been known to play in shorts and singlets... and it's 'allowed' after all they ARE MEMBERS and have paid the big bucks!

Douglas Myers in NZ Will Take Senses To The Baltics In Summer

International Opportunities for Kiwis has become a well-worn subject with Sir Doug. London-based Sir Doug remains involved with the Business Roundtable, which he once chaired and his primary business interest here is now investing in young students. Sir Douglas Myers is home this week to present the Douglas Myers Scholarship to Cambridge University in England. The scholarship, worth $100,000 a year, is for academically distinguished Kiwi students with leadership potential.

No Myers scholars have returned to New Zealand. Sir Doug used to hope they would bring their success back to New Zealand, he is now au fait with it – his children live overseas.

“That’s the New Zealand experience now – we export people.

“There’s advantage to be had with young people dotted around the place that think well of New Zealand and can be drawn on to give opinions – if Kiwis are willing to listen.”

Sir Doug is not yet returning to New Zealand just yet.

“I may well. It’s more likely this year than five years ago.”

This summer his plans are to take his yacht, Senses to the Baltics. Then fishing in Alaska and Iceland.

Eamon Cleary's Pencarrow Purchace

Eamon Cleary paid $300,000 for a Pencarrow chestnut filly at Karaka. A price that could be considered superb value given the recent success of the chestnut’s immediate family.  This filly has a direct line back to a mare that sold for the world record price of US$14 million dollars at auction in Kentucky last November. The filly is from Silver and Roses (Sadler’s Wells), a half-sister to reigning US Broodmare-Of-The-Year Better Than Honour (Deputy Minister – Blush With Pride (Blushing Groom)).

Silver and Roses’ sisters have performed admirably, Better Than Honour leaving the Champion USA 3YO Filly of 2007 in Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy), while Maryinsky (Sadler’s Wells), a full sister to Silver and Roses, left the 2007 Champion European 3YO filly Peeping Fawn (Danehill).

Furthermore the sisters are from the Group 1 Kentucky Oaks winner Blush with Pride (Blushing Groom), while delving even deeper into their pedigrees you will find the likes of top sires Redoute’s Choice, El Gran Senor, and Try My Best.

Cleary spotted the filly’s classic breeding lines because he was at the Lexington sale and purchased her on his own account with the view to racing her in New Zealand in the stable of Roger James at Cambridge.

“Both sides of the filly’s family have the genetics that go to create a Blue Hen mare,” Mr Cleary says.

A Blue Hen is a brood mare that produces high-quality foals regardless of the sire’s pedigree.

It may also interest some of our Polo loving clients to hear that Eamon Cleary is considering investing in a state-of the-art thoroughbred and polo pony stud near Buenos Aires in Argentina.

Kauri Cliffs

Don, Glen,Timothy...? (one of the Eagles): I'd like to introduce to you the next president of the United States Mr Jo Walsh! Joe Walsh: 'I'd like to remind you I'm running for president, and here is an industrial love song' ....'my mazuratti does 185, I lost my license and now I don't drive...' Live moments don't get better than that!

I have found Golf 'Heaven'...or at least one of the special clouds...Kauri Cliffs. Look for a book called 'Fairways to Heaven'. Along with Millbrook in Queenstown.  You have just gotta come down here one day.......and experience parts of this beautiful land that is like a serious huge breath of crystal clear air.

A couple of days at Kauri Cliffs (seriously located in the middle of 'no where' ), would have you ....well wanting to come back.
